Although sprawling and eccentric is a well-established genre for compilations such as this, some compilers like the Bar Culture series seem to reach a more satisfying balance of music quite effortlessly. The criteria for their second volume--released in collaboration with FHM--is pretty much the same as the first, ie: nothing but well-produced, feel-good tunes irrespective of style, genre, age or chart position. Old tracks from the likes of Donna Summer, Gwen McRae, Sylvia Striplin, the Jackson 5 and Dusty Springfield sit comfortably and favourably next to more modern yet still classic gems. "Concrete Schoolyard" by hip hoppers Jurassic 5, "Caught Out There" by r&b star Kelis, "On and On" by Erykah Badu, "Eple" by Norwegian smoothies Royksopp and "Once Around The Block" by Badly Drawn Boy are all part of this gently stirring sonic landscape and help put the heart and soul at ease. A diverse selection, and one that's perfect for those days when you just can't decide what to listen to. --Paul Sullivan
