Xena Warrior Princess Vol.5

You won't find it on the packaging, but this is the fifth volume of music released from the television series. That says much both for its popularity and the wealth of diversity featured in what is essentially a mythological soap opera. The previous volumes have concentrated just on composer Joseph LoDuca's orchestral scores--only volume 3 branches out a little. He's represented nicely again here, particularly by the schizophrenic pots-and-pans dance "Spurned" and "Xena Rap" which makes thunderous use of his main title theme. Preceding this latter half of the disc are a surprise collection of songs that remind you just how experimental the show has been outside its original format: Burt Bacharach's "Always Something There To Remind Me", Stewart and Lennox's "Sisters Are Doin' It", Lennon and McCartney's "We Can Work It Out" and even Strong and Whitfield's "War". All this means its not as coherent a listen as the other volumes, but at number five the idea is clearly to show that anything goes. --Paul Tonks
