Y3K: Soundtrack To The Future

Even though it might never conquer the charts like UK garage, this mix album proves that the sound has a lot to offer. Young gun DJ Hyper has located the sound of perfect cross-pollination. Way Out West and Bushwacka showcase the softer, glitter-tinted end of funky breakbeat, while Ashtrax, Solid Ground and Lexi Love take the no pain no gain road to tough club grooves. Elsewhere Tsunami One's "Hip Hop Phenomenon" does exactly what it says on the tin and Hybrid's canny remix of rave classic "Bombscare" is the perfect fusion of roots and reinvention. Uncompromising, slipping into darkness and often as menacing as any drum & bass album twice its pace, this may not be the future it promises but it's certainly a fresh new chapter of sound from an underground scene too long on the cusp.--Calvin Bush
