Owing as much in sound to the deep, visionary techno of Carl Craig and quirky electronics of LFO, as they do the ambient nuances of Brian Eno and melodic glances of Bola, the four heads behind Aphelion certainly have a lot to be thankful for. As do we, in receipt of this, their long-awaited debut LP. an accomplished blend of brooding techno, pattering electro and deep, refracted ambience. Moving intermittently in and out of the public eye over the last nine years or so, with a series of low key and limited releases, Aphelion's course has been one of slow but steady progress, an unhurried work rate that's culminated in Zugzwang, a warm and often beautiful exploration of undulating electronic contours and intelligent, sci-fi soundscapes: from the beatless expanse of "Deep ADJ" and swirling futurism of "Lucier" to the off kilter, heavier techno of "Arrest" and tiny electro, hi-hats of "Syd" the tone is rich, spacious and very deep; as atmospheric synth lines, subtle melodies and sunken basslines all contribute toward Aphelion's matured and very welcoming sound.--Found Sounds
