Reviews on Maths Desk LeapFrog

Leap into learning with LeapFrog's new Maths Desk. After many years of success in the US with the Writing Desk, LeapFrog has now applied all that great interactive learning fun to the world of numbers.

The Maths Desk is aimed at children from 4–7 years, although an inquisitive three-year-old will certainly enjoy an early introduction to maths. Not only does the Maths Desk teach counting from 1–20, but it also innovatively teaches writing of the numbers as well as basic addition and subtraction.

The Maths Desk itself contains an animated LCD screen, an erasable writing slate and pen and big coloured buttons for each number up to 20. There are a total of six different game modes, each designed to make maths a whole bunch of fun. Parents or children can also select between beginners or advanced setting to spice up the games for children at the older end of the age range. Conveniently, there is also a volume control for the benefit of parents!

In "Learning Mode" the child is invited to press a number. The Writing Desk then not only tells your little learner which number he has pressed, but then writes the number on the LCD screen. The child is then prompted to write the number himself.

In the "Counting Game", once the child has pressed one of the number buttons, the Desk will count sequentially up to that number. As with

all games the written number also appears on the LCD screen.

The "Mystery Game" challenges young mathematicians to think of a number and then asks them correctly to identify another number based on clues about their first choice. The "Add On Game" invites the child to choose one number and the Desk then adds a second and asks the child to sum the two numbers. As well as restating the numbers verbally the Desk also draws the mathematic operation as a traditional adding sum on the screen. The "Take Away Game" works in the same way as the "Add On Game" but with subtraction.

Finally, "Beat The Clock" asks the child to choose a number and then sets a time limit for the youngster to identify the next number in the sequence.

All in all this is wonderful way to make maths fun in the land of the little people. Today's most progressive infant teachers have long been saying that only by introducing a hefty pinch of fun and interactivity will youngsters really embrace maths. LeapFrog seems to have fully understood this with its Maths Desk and found a great way for parents to support early learning in the home.

The Maths Desk from LeapFrog is a great way to bring mathematical fun to children aged 3–7 years. --Donna Rossignol
