Reviews on The Mummy Upstarts

The Mummy is an adventure board game for two to six players aged six and over, based on the blockbuster film of the same name. The objective is to be the first player to find the Scroll of Thebes by solving a series of clues. The game comes with a parental warning that the nature of this game could overexcite children and needs to be monitored by an adult. A parent or overseer is essential, because the premise of the game is based around a treasure hunt around your home and before play can begin someone needs to hide a series of tokens and the Scroll of Thebes about your house. There are a series of clue cards from which you can choose when setting up that describes a part of the house, or object within it. For example, one reads: "In here food gets cold and may even freeze. The food is kept fresh like salad and cheese". The game proceeds with players choosing either a good or evil character, then collecting cards that gives them the right to try and solve a clue. This involves the reading of the clue card, then a race against the sand timer to find the hidden counter. Meanwhile characters of the opposite disposition (i.e., good, evil) roll the die and try to become a chaser, who hunts down the original searcher trying to get to them before they can uncover the counter. An added element involves the switching on, or off of lights depending on whether you are searcher or chaser. It does lead to the overexcitement warned of and pandemonium can rule, making this an ideal party game for smaller gatherings.

The Mummy is a well presented board game, with simple rules that are easy to get to grips with. It provides a lot of fun, but the required set-up time beforehand by an adult and the mayhem of children running about the house chasing down clues and each other, may put some off. --Heather Wilson
